„The true tragedy of our time is still unfolding across the globe, barely noticeable from day to day. I’m talking about the loss of our planet’s wild places, it’s biodiversity.
To restore stability to our planet, we must restore its biodiversity. The very thing that we’ve removed. It’s the only way out of this crisis we’ve created. We must rewild the world.
" [David Attenbourough Life on our Planet]

We humans have depleted the resources of the earth in the efforts to improve our life. More than 75% of the earth's land has suffered from land degradation and if the development continues unabated, land degradation reach 95% by the year 2025 [IPBES]
Land degradation is the main cause of the collapse of ecosystems. The top one meter of the earth's surface is the base of almost 85% of life on earth, including the life of humans.
We need to redesign buildings and cities in an effort to reclaim biodiversity, soil fertility and to increase air and water quality. For the past 50 years, architects have vigorously made experiments with natural solutions which have been fruitful. The solutions are often simple and usually they derive insights from the architecture of our ancestors. Green roofs, for example, play an important part in reclaiming ecosystems which attract insects and bird life, as well as increasing water evaporation and reducing the load on the sewer system. Many territories and countries have put into their building regulations that roofs should be thatched roofs.
Sustainable architecture is an approach in architecture which aims to reduce or eliminate the environmental damage that occurs during construction and during the lifetime of a building. It connects ideology about energy use, the use of sustainable materials, design with attention to nature and encouragement to a sustainable lifestyle. Sustainable architecture is intertwined with the environment in which it is created. An immense amount of knowledge is will be created in the projects which take place in this country. As of today, sustainable architecture has a long way to go in Iceland compared to our neighbouring countries.
